Growth || Summer Offerings

I was helping my son clean out his house and I found a bag of potatoes, bursting with life, reaching out and up into the sky with the energy sourced from the material below. This material is what we cultivate. It is what we are given and what we do with it. Take the potatoes; they reach into each other just as much as they reach up and out. The horizontal spread of roots is what facilitated the individual new potatoes to grow. I have been thinking about how my body, mind, and spirit are all a part of a network of resource for what is to grow. While I am less involved in the expanding up and out, I feel increasingly available to pour my energy into the network of resource that supports new growth. The ice has melted and seeds are sprouting. Let’s grow!

June in the Bay Area: Capoeira Arts Camp, BAASE, Bodywork

I will be traveling to the Bay Area in June to co-teach at Capoeira Arts Camp, a camp for children to practice Capoeira Arts, and consequently for BAASE, a several day long dance event made of workshops and gatherings. While in Berkeley I will be offering Bodywork sessions. See below for information and links to register!

  1. Capoeira Arts Camp: June 16th-20th A camp for youth ages 5-12 years. Teachers will be Mestre Tico, the founder of Ilê Axé Capoeira, a world-class capoeirista, and Mestre Marreta (myself), co-founder of Berkeley Capoeira Collective, a teacher of experiential anatomy and functional movement. The art class will be with Nichole Talbott (Manga Rosa) the founder of ASE ARTS. This will take place at 1901 San Pablo in Berkeley. There are still a few spots available so please tell your friends and family!
  1. BAASE: June 24th-29th The Bay Area Axis Syllabus Exchange supports the community of Bay Area dancers who are students and teachers of the Axis Syllabus. It is also geared for the novice, or any person who is interested in anatomy, biomechanics, fascia and how they and more relate to human movement (dance being a complex and fun expression of movement). There are still spots available. Standard full-event pricing will be available until June 1st, at which point individual drop-in class registration and "late bird" pricing will become available!
  1. Bay Area Bodywork: Bodywork slots will be operating on a first-come first-serve basis. I will be working out of the Berkeley Hills but not at the top of Marin as per usual. Please check the schedule confirmation for the address!

July on the East Coast: Vadiando Vermont & WildHeart Center!

  1. July 2nd-5th: I will be teaching at Vadiando Vermont (June 26-July 6) at The Field Center. I will teach a CAXIXI (small basket percussion instrument) workshop, as well as some injury prevention classes. All lineages, groups and levels welcome!
  1. July 6th: I will be offering a class on Contact Improvisation at WildHeart Center in early July. Later this fall I will be returning for an Axis Syllabus workshop–stay tuned for future offerings!
    • 4:00-5:00pm: "Waiting for the Weight" – Contact Improvisation class with Nuria Bowart
    • 5:00-6:30pm Contact Improvisation Jam with Potluck to follow!

August on Salt Spring Island: Rhizome springs

August 7th-10th: "Dancing with Spirals: Axis Syllabus, Capoeira and CI" -Workshop with Nuria Bowart

  • This class will draw from the physical intelligence of Capoeira, the relational intelligence of CI and the anatomical intelligence of the Axis Syllabus. We will practice functional strategies for locomotion, moving in and out of the floor, and build comfort moving off of the external vertical (finding support from hands/head/other). As we inhabit the spirals present in our bodies and around us, we will find greater ease in dancing with them through space. To dance is to move with all of the limits and possibilities of what and where we are. To improvise is to be available to adapt and transform each moment as we meet it. We will explore: Solo movement and Contact Improvisation practices, games and scores, anatomical research, the engine of our own curiosity. The workshop is suitable for dancers with a good handle of CI fundamentals.

I look forward to connecting and dancing with you this season. Let’s grow!
