A Message From This Medium
Last month we met in residency for the hOme project, and began the VESSEL mentorship program. It has been a month of diving into memory and definition, embryology, fascial anatomy and group process. In the residency, we danced together, sang together, ate and slept together: inquiring about home and sharing our stories in ritual and play. In VESSEL, we meet in virtual space, learning and questioning, steering our attention together.
I am aware that the Zoom format of education has only recently begun. To be able to “meet” in virtual space is relatively new. This newness inspires my curiosity…
I grew up with a father who quoted Marshal McLuhin (a Canadian communications theorist). “ The medium is the message” was a kind of mantra in my household.
I am curious what the medium of shared virtual space is communicating to us with its very manner of existence? What is its message? — Is it something about creativity? Coming together across distances? Imagination? Invention? Limitation? — How are we merging what is ‘real’ with what is ‘artificial’ through our behavior and our modes of interaction? What realities are we constructing by coming together in these distinct contexts?
I have so many questions and so few answers. Somehow, I am finding a way to continue to inquire through the work that I do. Hopefully, you can join me in inquiry somewhere along the way.
