Transitions

This year has been full of transitions. Since deciding to no longer work at the Field Center, I have been focusing more intently on teaching and mentoring, art making, and family. The choice to move toward love in a time of turmoil has been a necessity for health and survival. The decision to shift away from the Field Center has been complex and painful, and ultimately it is a navigation towards surrender and greater ease. Allowing myself to let go and welcome change feels like a necessary skill, as all things are impermanent including not only my work and identity, but my very flesh and bones. Holding onto what is changing feels futile. Embracing the chaos feels necessary. The Field Center is thriving and has a great team, it does not need me. So I choose to move in the direction of where I am needed and wanted.
While teaching I am connected to my purpose. I experience an intense alignment of curiosity, passion, and expression. Over decades, I have been refining this skill. Within it, I find that my role is to create the context wherein learning can happen. I recognize that whatever information I am offering is not the main event of my students learning. More than providing facts, my duty as a teacher is to inspire curiosity and wonder as it relates to human movement, dance, and Capoeira. Learning takers place within each of us, and while it is supported by others, it ultimately lives within.

This year I have initiated the hOme project. This is a creative project involving 8 Artists: Kerwin Barrington, Kristen Rulifson, Asha Passalacqua, Lalaina Ravelojaona, Belinda He, Summer Minerva and Myself. Mathew Williams will help with creative direction, Chani Bockwinkel with filming and editing. This international cast will be working together in residency and alone in their various places of residence. Together we are exploring the subject of home as it lives in each of our bodies and minds. Home as location, object, people and feeling. Home as somewhere to return to, and also at times, run from. The project involves film creation and live performances. It will be a two year commitment to inquiry and art making. I am honored to work with these artists and very excited to learn from each of them as they explore and express what home is for them. Please stay connected so that you can follow our process and experience what we create!

Next year, I will offer the VESSEL mentorship program for the second time. This mentorship is to support those who are interested in developing their understanding and application of the Axis Syllabus©. The program will be more densely concentrated with weekly meetings and assignments, and a time frame of only 3 months. There are many interested students but only 12 spaces available, so I encourage early registration if you are interested!
